Monday Meme

Yes, I'm alive (thanks, Tom, for asking)! I have a blog post about my blogging absence which I'll post soon. Until then, this is a meme that has taken facebook by storm:

25 Random Things Meme

1) I owe my family to the gal who tagged me for this meme, Charlene. She was supposed to embark on the Carnival cruise ship Sensation as the Production Singer but got cast in the National Tour of Miss Saigon and told Carnival I was available to take her place. I flew out to the Sensation less than a week later then after 3 months there was transferred to the Carnival Fantasy where I met Dan who was the orchestra pianist. Thanks, Charlene!

2) I am a die hard Washington Redskins and NFL football fan. I can hold my own against any guy when discussing football. My parents recently sent me my 37-year old, size 2T, Redskins coat that Ittyboy will be sporting next season.

3) Dan is a Green Bay Packers fan. Had he been a Cowboys fan we would probably not be married. I hate the Cowboys that much.

4) Dan is the 2nd of 14 children (12 boys, 2 girls). He was the first of his siblings to get married. No pressure there.

5) I'm seriously thinking of giving up facebook for Lent. I may be addicted.

6) I suffer from panic attacks. So far I've been able to control them without meds. Stress and clutter will trigger them.

7) I've traveled down the Amazon River in a canoe.

8) The first apartment Dan and I lived in caught on fire. (Just 2 months after getting married.) Miraculously, even though the 4 apartments behind us and the 2 next to us were destroyed, ours suffered only minor smoke damage.

9) For years after that fire I slept in sweats with my shoes and a flashlight under my bed. (The fire occurred in the middle of the night.)

10) Bittyman's middle name is Michael. Ittyboy's is Gabriel. Archangels are awesome.

11) Dan is a type 1 (juvenile) diabetic. Dan has only had one life-threatening diabetic episode in his life. It occurred when I was 8 months pregnant with Bittyman. I fully believe Dan's Guardian Angel woke me up out of a dead sleep to find Dan lying comatose next to me due to a dangerously low blood sugar. I was able to flip Dan over and administer a glucose shot before the paramedics arrived.

The only permanent damage from that incident affected the part of Dan's brain that reminds him to check the pockets of all pants before putting them in the washer. Thus why we will all be sporting M&M chocolate-stained clothing as of today. (Ittyboy likes M&M's and, apparently, saves them in his pockets.)

12) I always unload my grocery cart by where it does in my house - fridge stuff, freezer stuff, pantry stuff, household stuff - so the checker is forced to bag those items together, thus making it easier for me to unload when I get home.

13) Counting babies currently in utero, I have 23 nieces and nephews. I keep track of them with an Excel spreadsheet.

14) I really want to get a tattoo but I'm terrified of needles.

15) When I was in 2nd grade I wanted to be an oceanographer.

16) I will not wear open-toed shoes unless I've had a pedicure.

17) I make jewelry and have sold several of my pieces.

18) Often when I'm sleeping I will put one arm straight up in the air and then rub it with my other hand. It must be genetic - both Bittyman and Ittyboy do the same thing while sleeping.

19) I'd love to go to cooking school so I could cook like the contestants on Top Chef. I'm still in awe over a Quick Fire challenge in season 2: "Create an amuse bouche dish using $10 of ingredients from a vending machine." Genius! Most nights I struggle to come up with a meal using all the ingredients in my kitchen!

20) I can still do the splits.

21) I have dark brown eyes and dark brown hair but both of my boys are blond with blue eyes (like Dan as a child). I had a stranger tell me I was doing Bittyman a disservice by not admitting he was adopted.

22) I got 3 crowns over the summer. Paying for them was much more painful then getting them.

23) My confirmation saint is St. Elizabeth Ann Seton.

24) My little brother named one of his daughters Victoria. Her nickname is 'Tori' which is much cuter than 'Vicki'.

25) I used to be adamantly against cosmetic surgery. That was before 2 pregnancies, 2 C-sections and nursing for 45 months (and still counting). I'm back to my pre-Bittyman weight but if I had the $$$ and there was no risk, I'd get my pre-baby body back in time for my 40th birthday in June. (No amount of working out is going to lift everything back to where it started!) But I'd settle for ZOOM teeth whitening.

Consider yourself tagged if you haven't already done this on facebook!

Monday Meme

Tracy has tagged me in the 'Six Things That Make Me Happy' meme.

According to the rules, I have to post six things that make me really happy... and pass it on to give six more people a reason to be thankful!

So six things that make me happy...
1) 'White Trailer Trash Thanksgiving' with fabulous friends, delicious food & libations and everyone playing Wii bowling!
2) Our Christmas lights. They are beautiful, numerous and took Dan 5 hours to put up with 'help' from the Heroes.
3) The sound of Bittyman singing descant to 'Do You Hear What I Hear'.
4) Finding in our storage space (while pulling out the Christmas decorations) a Rubbermaid bin filled with winter clothes in Ittyboy's size!
5) Needing dressy winter outfits to wear while cantoring and scoring at Kohl's two skirts, a shirt and a jacket for $51! (Plus I received a $10 Kohl's giftcard back!)
6) Coffee with Coffee-Mate Festive Flavors creamer. (Too bad I'm out of coffee this morning. Diet Dr. Pepper just ain't cutting it.)

Now I need to choose six other blog friends... in no particular order... (does Samantha on DWTS bug anyone else as much as she annoys the living crap outta me? Someone get her a Fatburger and a Thesaurus. I have to mute her when she speaks... but I digress):
Sharon (Who reminded me that The Grinch is on tonight - Thanks!)
Amy
K (Who probably won't participate 'cause her husband is out of the country this week, but I'm thinking of ya!)
Becki (Who can participate while NAK her newborn, Grace! Check out her blog for pics!)
Teri
Grandmai (Who doesn't blog but can post participate by posting her answers in a Note on facebook, hint, hint!)

ABC's of Homemaking Meme

From Tracy's.

Aprons - Y/N? If yes, what does your favorite look like?
My 'apron' is whatever Old Navy t-shirt I'm sporting.

Baking- Favorite thing to bake?
My body, poolside.

Clothes line - Y/N ?
Aprons, clothes lines - who wrote this meme, my Great-Grandmother (God rest her soul)?

Donuts - Have you ever made them?
No, but Bittyman wants me to get one of these so we can make donut-like pancake puffs.

Everyday - One homemaking thing you do everyday.
Make coffee.

Freezer - Do you use a deep freeze?
Dan bought a chest freezer for my birthday last year. Although I didn't talk to him for days afterward, I have to admit it's pretty darn handy.

Garbage Disposer Y/N?
Not having one is an option?

Handbook - What's your favorite homemaking resource?
The Food Network and HGTV

Ironing - Love it or Hate it?
Don't do it.

Junk Drawer - Y/N? If yes, where is it?
Yes, in the kitchen. But I'm pretty clutter-phobic. It's not very junky.

Kitchen - color & decorating scheme.
Rich Creme with an accent wall in Mother Nature (green). Decorated in Tuscany meets Pier 1 on clearance.

Love - what is your favorite part of homemaking?
Anything that involves the Heroes. They're entertainingly helpful little critters.

Mop - Y/N?
Swiffer wet, almost daily.

Nylons, machine or hand wash?
I only wear them on Christmas. I splurge for a new pair yearly.

Oven - Do you use the window or open the oven to check?
Window. Safer with Ittyboy around.

Pizza - what do you put on yours?
Black olives and extra cheese for the Heroes. BBQ chicken for me. Dan will eat anything. Darn, now I'm craving CPK.

Quiet - what do you do during the day when you get a quiet moment?
Sit. Usually at the computer where I read blogs, play Scramble and even pray.

Recipe Card Box - Y/N?
Box, no. Blog, yes.

Style of house - what style is your house?
Whatever they call the stucco/tile roof style that's popular out here in the west.

Tablecloths and napkins?
Napkins. A tablecloth + Ittyboy is asking for new dishes... hmmm... I'm kinda tired of my 12-year-old set...

Under the kitchen sink - organized or toxic wasteland?
Nothing but the trash can and stored paper towels. Ittyboy has mastered child-proof locks.

Vacuum - how many times per week?
How about per day? Usually after each meal.

Wash - how many loads of laundry do you do per week?
Again, per day. At least 2.

X's - Do you keep a daily list of things to do that you cross off?
No. Sorta follow the Flylady system. (But don't sign up for her e-mails. They'll clutter your inbox.)

Yard - Who does what?
The HOA.

ZZZ's - What is your last homemaking task for the day before going to bed?
Picking up the countless plastic toys scattered about, briefly fantasizing about tossing them all into the trash, but realizing the psychological damage that would cause, I instead return them to their proper baskets and bins.

I tag anyone who wants to play. Let me know in the comment box if you do.

Monday Meme

1. What food does your best friend not like?
Dan's not a fan of Chinese food, which really bites (pardon the pun) because it's my favorite.

2. What is your favorite cookbook?
My newest one: Simple & Delicious Cookbook (Thanks, Aunt Sharon!)

3. Are you more of a sushi person or a lamb person?
Neither. Ick on both counts.

4. Given a choice of something fried and salty or something baked and sweet, what would you choose?
Depends on the time of month... gals, you know what I mean!

5. Do you buy whole chickens and boil them and pick the meat off or does that gross you out?
You can buy a whole chicken? Oh, you mean the rotisserie ones, right? Those are tasty...

6. How do you feel about butter, sour cream, cream cheese, and half and half?
Love 'em... in moderation. I'm lactose intolerant.

7. (Skip this question if you are a vegetarian.) If you are a carnivore, would you be willing to hunt or butcher your meat? Or to watch someone do that for you or would you rather not think of it? Or are you grateful for the animal who gave its life to sustain your life?
I can't eat an animal that looks remotely like its original form. For instance when I was in Mexico and had fish served with its head still on, I all but lost my lunch. Peeling shrimp is about as much as I can handle. If I had to hunt and/or butcher I'd end up a vegetarian. Or a carbetarian.

8. What is the most exotic ingredient or spice in your cupboard?
This and this. (But I have been to Grenada, the "spice island." That's exotic, right?)

9. What is your favorite vegetable?
Dinner's still on my tongue so I'm going with corn on the cob.

10. What is your favorite fruit?
Just chowed down on some delicious watermelon... final answer.

I'll tag anyone who wishes to play. Please let me know if you do!

I've Got the Urge to... Meme

Saw this over on Tracy's blog and I thought I'd tag myself... 'cause it seemed more fun than mopping my floor, which is what I should be doing.

I've got the urge to...

  • put aloe vera lotion on my sunburned legs. That's what I get for spending 2 hours poolside today. (Hey, don't hate me 'cause you chose to live in a part of the country where it's still winter.)
  • curl up on the couch with my Trader Joe's dark chocolate covered pretzels and watch the new episode of Desperate Housewives. (T-minus 15 minutes and counting!)
  • give Dan a big kiss for cleaning out our garage storage closet.
  • tackle our office closet which has become the dumping ground for stuff without a home.
  • run a 5K before the end of the year.
  • go on the women's silent retreat sponsored by my diocese next month.
  • blow our tax refund on new tile floors.
I tag anyone who also needs a reason to procrastinate from housework!

Christmas Meme

Saw this over at Orthometer and thought I'd play!

1. Wrapping paper or gift bags?
A bit of both, depending on the awkwardity of the present size. (Yes, I know that's not a real word. It should be.)

2. Real or artificial tree? Love real. Miss real. But learned the hard way our second Christmas in the desert that spending $75 for a real tree is no guarantee it will not become tinder within a week. Had to take said tree down Christmas night before it spontaneously combusted. Bought an artificial the next day and have been using it ever since.

3. When do you put up the tree? Thanksgiving weekend. I have no problem with having decorations up during Advent.

4. When do you take the tree down? No sooner than the Epiphany.

5. Do you like egg nog? Hell no. Seriously. That's just disgusting.

6. Favorite gift received as a child? The dollhouse my father built.

7. Do you have a Nativity scene? Yes. A collection from Fontanini which we add to every year and a Little People Nativity for the boys to play with.

8. Hardest person to buy for? My husband and my father. They receive lots of Packers and Bills stuff for lack of other ideas.

9. Worst Christmas gift you ever received? Maybe not worst, but funniest. When we were first married Dan went into Lane Bryant looking to buy me some sweaters for Christmas. Dan had no idea Lane Bryant was a plus-size woman's store. He asked the saleswoman, "My wife is 5'7" and weighs 120 pounds - what size would she wear?" Said saleswoman proceeded to sell him several sweaters in size 16/18.

When I returned the sweaters the day after Christmas I called the saleswoman on the carpet for trying to make a quick sale to an unsuspecting husband when she should have pointed him next door to The Limited.

(Explanation for the men who are reading this going, 'huh'? Any woman on the planet could tell you that a 5'7', 120-pound female wears a size 6. Saleslady totally punked Dan. And no, I'm not 120 lbs. anymore. But I am psyched to be at pre-Bittyman weight. Good enough for Diva Mom.)

10. Mail or email Christmas cards? This year I'm doing a web card... if I can find time to finish it today.

11. Favorite Christmas movie? A Christmas Story and It's a Wonderful Life. (Yeah, that's two movies. So? It's my meme.)

12. When do you start shopping for Christmas? Early fall I start keeping my eye out for good deals.

13. Have you ever recycled a Christmas present? I plead the 5th.

14. Favorite thing to eat at Christmas? Peppermint Mochas and Christmas Crack.

15. Clear lights or colored lights on the tree? Clear.

16. Favorite Christmas song? Sacred, O Holy Night. Secular, Mary Did You Know.

17. Travel at Christmas or stay home? Stay home. Thanksgiving is for traveling.

18. Can you name all of Santa's reindeer? I've been a professional Christmas Caroler for 11 years. I'll sing them to you.

19. Angel on the tree top or a star? Star.

20. Open the presents Christmas Eve or morning? One Christmas Eve after Mass. The majority Christmas morning. Grandma & Grandpa I's gifts when they arrive on January 5.

21. Most annoying thing about this time of year? The overused, politically correct phrase, 'Happy Holidays'.

22. Best thing about this time of year? Watching Bittyman's head trying not to explode from excitement. And Ittyboy try his darnedest to crawl to get the Christmas tree. And the music. All Christmas music, all the time, from Thanksgiving weekend through the Epiphany!

I tag anyone who is so ready for Christmas that they have time to read this meme! (Me, I'm just procrastinating. Cleaning, wrapping, and website-creating all await me.)
